Doves @ the Brixton Academy

You always know you've been to a great concert when, as you leave the venue, you think the band that was playing was the best band in the world and any other bands by comparison, are utter rubbish.

This happened this weekend when I went to the Brixton Academy with some mates to see the amazing Doves. They played a great mix of songs from their latest album, but also old-time favourites and the gig come to an end while they played the brilliant "There Goes the Fear".

The Royal Society

In the heart of London, between the busy and noisy Piccadilly Circus and the ever so elegant St James's Park, lies the Royal Society. Founded in 1660, its current activities include funding scientific research, providing science policy advice to HM Government, and promoting public interest in and understanding of science, among others.

Within the last couple of weeks, I have attended two lectures at the Royal Society:

• Climate change and extinction, and


• The Two Cultures

Lectures are free, open to the public and places are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Both lectures have been absolutely fascinating and a real eye opening experience to someone, like me, whose knowledge of the sciences is quite limited. The quality of the speakers is outstanding, and that of the delegates as well: Richard Dawking attended the first lecture and both the directors of the Natural History Museum and Science Museum attended the second.
